budget help
We have automatic savings into our IRA and savings accounts. All of our bills are paid by auto deduction so they are never missed/late. Because of this, what we have to spend is what is in our account. When we get paid our bills are automatically paid, so the rest that is left over is what we have to “play with” until the next paycheck.
I would recommend doing that, as it makes budgeting easy because you never have to think about it plus you save money before you even see it.
I think writing down and tracking what you are spending really helps. When you have it on paper (or on a computer screen) you can really see where the money goes. Suddenly that $2 cup of coffee you might indulge in a few times a week shows up as the $20 or more per month it actually is. So tracking can really help. (There are a couple of sites listed below that you can use to build a budget and track your spending. The first one,, is free.)
I also look carefully at what I’m buying and why. Habit? Is this something I really need? Would I feel better buying this, or having this money tucked away?
Also, having the money taken out of your paycheck, or putting it right away into a special account (that you don’t touch!) helps. Don’t let it sit around in your pocket…..
