Time Is On Your Side
Most rental companies operate on a 24-hour clock. That is, they probably won't rent to you if you only want a car for 12 hours. Although you might want to check some local agency, because they might have leniency with the rules. Since most agencies operate on a 24-hour period, ensure enough time to return the car. Make sure you leave enough time to return the car so you don't get charged an extra day. Even if you're late 3 or 4 hours, you'll probably be charged an extra day. If you're catching a flight, then give yourself enough leeway to return the car and to get to the airport on time.

Where Does This Car Go?
In some cases, you can return the rental vehicle to a different city or even state. Just check the policy regarding returns with the rental agency beforehand. Returning the rental vehicle to another location might be a convenience to you, but it could incur an extra fee, however. Some companies even offer a "drive-away" program. During certain seasons or periods for reasons of economy car rental companies require vehicles to be transported to different locations. If driving one way suits your situation, then it might be in your best interest to inquire about any such programs.

Driving Is Always More Fun With Two
Upon returning the car, an employee can drive with you to the airport to drop you off. Ask about this program before kidnapping a counter agent.

I'm In A Hurry To Get Things Done
Some car rental companies will offer an Express Drop-off Service. At an extra cost, you can drop the car, keys and contract without having to deal with a counter agent. This is handy if you're in a rush to get to the airport.
